Endpoint Central distribution servers act as localised repositories for software and patch deployments across your network. Rather than every agent downloading files directly from the central server or the internet, distribution servers handle that traffic locally, reducing bandwidth consumption across sites. This is particularly useful for organisations with multiple office locations or remote sites.

When Do You Need an Endpoint Central Distribution Server?

Distribution servers are worth considering when you have agents across multiple sites or remote locations. Without one, every agent pulls patch and software files directly from the central Endpoint Central server, which can put significant strain on your WAN links, particularly during large deployments.

As a general rule, a distribution server makes sense when you have a site with a reasonable number of agents that would otherwise be downloading the same files repeatedly across a slow or metered connection.

Endpoint Central Distribution Server Requirements

Before setting up a distribution server, there are a few things to bear in mind:

The distribution server must be able to communicate with the main Endpoint Central server over the network. A dedicated machine is recommended rather than sharing with other resource-heavy applications. The server needs sufficient disk space to store the patch and software binaries that agents at that site will need. ManageEngine recommend checking the current Endpoint Central documentation for the latest specific requirements, as these can vary by version.

Once set up, you can configure replication policies to control when and how files are transferred from the main server to the distribution server, helping you manage bandwidth during business hours.

A common question we get asked is what actually happens if you remove them. We recently helped a customer work through exactly this decision, and the answer depends largely on your network setup and how your agents are configured.

As a UK-based ManageEngine specialist with over 15 years of experience, we have helped hundreds of organisations design and manage their Endpoint Central environments. Here is one example.

Understanding the Impact of Removing Distribution Servers

We recently worked with a customer who had two distribution servers — one in the South and one in the North of the UK — and were planning to remove them ahead of an infrastructure migration. Their main concern was the impact on software and patch deployments.

Removing Endpoint Central Distribution Servers: Our Expert Guidance

Leveraging our extensive experience with Endpoint Central, our team provided clear, detailed insights into the role of distribution servers and how their removal would affect system operations. We explained that:

  • Without distribution servers, every agent would need to download required files directly from the source, increasing bandwidth consumption.
  • Software deployments would need to leverage the HTTP Repository if a centrally accessible network share was not an option.
  • Bandwidth controls could be applied at the agent level to manage data transfer more efficiently, a method we commonly recommend for roaming users to ensure a seamless trickle-down of updates without overwhelming network resources.

The Outcome

By implementing agent-level bandwidth controls, the customer was able to remove their distribution servers without causing undue strain on the network, maintaining deployment efficiency throughout the migration.
