* Endpoint Central formerly known as Desktop Central

The native use of Endpoint Central’s agent technology has greatly improved the asset scanning capabilities of ServiceDesk Plus from Build 11300 onwards. The new integration now supports asset scanning of Windows, Linux and Mac devices using a universal agent.

However, since the new capabilities were introduced we’re often asked by customers ‘do I need a separate license for Endpoint Central?’.

The simple answer is no.

If you’re using the asset scanning features of ServiceDesk Plus to perform manual or scheduled inventory scanning only on devices which have the Endpoint universal agent installed there is no additional license or license component required. Device inventory scanning will be support for the number of nodes you have purchased for the ServiceDesk Plus Asset module.

As a copy of Endpoint Central is downloaded and installed as part of the ServiceDesk Plus asset scanning integration there are a few things to note:

  • The downloaded integration of Endpoint Central will work as a full 30-day trial on initial installation after which it will revert to the free edition.
  • The free edition of Endpoint Central will support inventory scanning for the number of nodes purchased for the ServiceDesk Plus asset module as part of the ServiceDesk Plus license.
  • An automatic installation of Endpoint Central normally installs as part of the ServiceDesk Plus application folder.
  • Endpoint Central can be manually downloaded and installed where required including on a separate application server.
  • It is possible to access the installed Endpoint Central management GUI directly via an internet browser although this is not necessary for inventory scanning purposes only.

It’s this last point that has often caused confusion for customers. If you do happen to browse to the Endpoint Central GUI you will see that Endpoint Central is running as a 30-day trial with ALL the features of the full product OR you will be shown a screen regarding reverting to the free edition which supports 25 only devices.

The 25-device count should NOT be confused with your asset node license in ServiceDesk Plus which is entirely separate. Simply perform the ‘Resolve’ function and you won’t see this license page again if browsing directly to the Endpoint Central application: remember you never need to access the Endpoint Central GUI directly if you’re only using asset inventory scanning in ServiceDesk Plus.

The only time you will ever need a license for Endpoint Central integrated with ServiceDesk Plus is when you want to use the full endpoint management capabilities of Endpoint Central such as Windows and third-party patch management, endpoint configuration, software deployment and a whole host of other features.
